Eating Disorder Awareness Week

Eating Disorder Awareness Week is February 1 - 7, 2017
It's closer than you think!

Eating Disorder Awareness Week (EDAW) is approaching fast.

For seven days in February, we're going to continue our efforts to debunk the stigma surrounding eating disorders by spreading the message that eating disorders are not a choice.

As always, EDAW will be a truly collective effort. The provinces, territories and many municipalities are set to light notable landmarks in purple from February 1 to 7 to support eating disorder awareness - including the Peace Bridge in Niagara Falls, High Level Bridge in Edmonton, City Hall in Vancouver. Groups across the country are busy planning awareness-raising and educational activities for their communities, using the hashtags #NotAChoice and #EDAW2017 (#SEMTA2017 in French) to get the word out.

At the National Eating Disorder Information Centre (NEDIC), we'll be hosting a number of activities as well:  our 4th annual spoken word event, voicED; and our 3rd annual Twitter chat.

If you have an event planned, let us know and we'll happily promote it on our website as well as our Facebook and Twitter feeds.

We know that through open, supportive dialogue, we can help break the shame, stigma and silence that affect nearly a million Canadians living with a diagnosed eating disorder - and the millions of others struggling with food and weight preoccupation. Our message can bring important information about these illnesses to people across the country and spread hope to those affected.

We'll be reaching out to the media to seek coverage for EDAW with stories that demystify this often misunderstood and underfunded mental illness. You can help by reaching out to local news outlets or by displaying one of our brand-new EDAW 2017 posters.
